Ten nominations this year in the best picture category. Why? I don't know. Maybe the industry is hurting and it's easier to get people to see a film if it's nominated. That said, most of the nominated films are pretty good. Not sure if they're the best, but I'm not a film critic. That said, some thoughts:
AVATAR - Blahhhhh. What a stupid movie. Tired story, thinly veiled political statements and a missing editor. Does it look awesome? Bro. Totally. But I'm not sure that should be worth much.
THE BLIND SIDE - Seriously? Does anyone else find the very premise of this movie annoyingly racist? Southern white people are not always nice, especially to people of another color. Read a history book. Just doesn't seem realistic.
DISTRICT 9 - Can't argue with awesome aliens and tight writing. Too weird to win though.
AN EDUCATION - Heard it was great, too indie. Not a chance.
THE HURT LOCKER - If Avatar doesn't win, this probably will. It's a great movie, not sure if it's the best, and it just has so much buzz, how can it not.
INGLORIOUS BASTERDS - Too much fun to win. I think it'd be my pick though.
PRECIOUS - Gross.
A SERIOUS MAN - Too dark and smart.
UP - Too childish, even though it has more truth than any of these other movies.
UP IN THE AIR - Wonderful movie, dark, true, and maybe a dark horse. It has the star power and the depth, but I'm just not sure it could overcome the Hurt Locker and Avatar hype machines. But really, do I care?
Who do you think will win?
