Apparently some angry internet voters are taking things way too far. The trends started earlier Tuesday afternoon with "Oprah rigs votes against Zach Anner". This was due to voters in the "Oprah searches for the Next Star" contest claiming she was manipulating votes on her site. The alleged tampering was due to the fact that a physically handicapped individual named Zach Anner was winning the contest, and all of a sudden fell to the #2 spot behind Dr. Phyllis. Anner has cerebal palsy yet presents a humorous and creative audition video. Dr. Phyllis is a teacher with a positive attitude too and plenty of experiences to tell about. Voters believe that the site has been coded a certain way to make sure that Dr. Phyllis gets more votes than Zack Anner does. Due to all this we now have an "Oprah hates the handicapped" hot search trend which has started up.
According to Oprah's Wikipedia entry, "behind the scenes Winfrey personally donates more of her own money to charity than any other show-business celebrity in America". One of her biggest charities was started in 1998, Oprah's Angel Network, which to date Oprah has raised over $51 million for. She helped raise $11 million for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and then pitched in $10 million of her own for the cause as well. And those are just two examples in addition to the gifts and donations she makes to her staff and audience members. She hosts TV shows to boost awareness of a large variety of issues and health conditions, including profiles of those who have disabilities. I don't see why Oprah would discriminate against the handicapped, especially if she gives plenty of her earnings away to help those who are less fortunate and features individuals on her TV show for their amazing victories in life.Â
This is one of the greatest but also most disastrous things about the internet all at once. One powerful thing is it gives everyone the freedom of expression and a place to voice opinions. It also gives people the power to angrily throw insults at celebrities and famous people just for the sake of doing so. You may not like Oprah's show or celebrity status, or the fact that a contestant is losing her contest. However, making accusations about Oprah's beliefs seems to be the wrong way to go about solving what you believe is an injustice.
