Singer Billy Joel has suffered from a congenital hip defect for years that has recently rendered him unable to walk without the assistance of a cane. Last weekend in New York, Joel had both hips operated on, in hopes that the double hip surgery would remedy the situation.
According to MSN, Billy Joel was recently seen hobbling around on a cane when he celebrated the grand opening of his motorcycle showroom on Long Island. After a visit with Howard Stern, th
e radio host said "weak" was the way he would describe the "Piano Man's" health and appearance.
A source told MSN the following regarding Billy Joel's frailty prior to his double hip surgery.
"He looked so frail, he was struggling to get around, to walk it looked like," the source said. "He had crutches and was moving slowly, kind of dragging them on the ground and grunting. People with him were being very patient, and he was nice and seemed in a good mood, just moving pretty slow."
Joel has recently been itching to get back on stage and maybe even consider touring again. The "Piano Man" said it was kind of fun taking some time off prior to and after the surgery, but that it was time to get back to what he loves to do and certainly does best....singing and playing his piano.
Billy Joel's former wife Christie Brinkley gave a statement to the media very recently regarding Joel's double hip surgery, saying he was "coming through with flying colors," following the operations.
Best of luck to Billy Joel on his post surgical recuperation. It will be wonderful to learn if he does in fact plan to tour again. At the very least it will be good to know he is back to making music...some of the very best music made throughout more than three decades.
