In her interview with Barbara Walters, Oprah Winfrey talked about why she and longtime partner Stedman Graham never had children.
When showing clips from the first interview that Walters had with Oprah, Oprah states that she thought that Stedman could be her husband one day and that they could start a family together. At that point in her life, Oprah was open to having children and getting married. Now twenty-some-odd years later, Oprah is still with Stedman, however unmarried and without children. So what happened? Why didn't Stedman Graham and Oprah Winfrey have children?
Oprah tells Walters that her life has basically been too busy to raise a child (let alone children). Although it is something that she did think about when she was younger, she realized that her life was hectic and that she wanted to do so much that it would be unfair to bring a child in to the world. She says that Stedman wonders how many children she will end up adopting each time that she visits Africa. As much as she would love to, she just feels it would be too much for her and unfair for a child.
We thought this was one of the most selfless acts that Oprah has done. So many celebrities have boatloads of children and leave them with babysitters and nannies while they are out working. It's not even just celebrities! It's working parents across the world. People have children and then don't spend time with them and it's a terrible way for a child to grow up. Oprah and Stedman made a very wise decision to not have children.
Oprah's heart is still very much open to children and she fills it by helping children across the world. Whether it's visiting a poor country and giving them clothes and shoes, or helping "her girls" get an education and come to America to study, Oprah gives back in her own way. And in her own way, she is a mother to so many.
