Happy birthday to you, George Clooney. Today, May 6th, 2011, the ever-handsome and charismatic actor turns 50. It seems unlikely that a man this perfect will suffer a mid-life crisis. He was named the Sexiest Man Alive by PEOPLE two times, and his good looks only seem to get better with age. He is a humanitarian; he has an Oscar, a tremendously successful career, and a gorgeous lady on his arm, Elisabetta Canalis (who has most recently gained media attention for getting naked for PETA). Although Clooney's acheivements can't be summed up in a list of awards, the man has collected quite a few. As well as an Oscar, he won two Golden Globes, an MTV movie award, numerous SAG awards, a People's Choice Award...and the list goes on.
George Clooney, however, is more than just an actor. He spearheaded relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and was recently featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine for his philanthropic work in Sudan. When asked if he would ever consider a career in politics, he famously stated: I didn't live my life in the right way for politics, you know. I f***ed too many chicks and did too many drugs, and that's the truth. That's gonna be my campaign slogan: 'I drank the bong water.'?" It is quite refreshing that he admits that he is not perfect when the rest of the world seems to believe that he is. He also remains endearingly humble. When he won the Emmy's Humanitarian Award last August, he said: "It's embarrassing. You don't want to be awarded for doing what you're supposed to be doing." Seriously, what a guy.
What is George Clooney doing to celebrate the big 5-0? Many people want to know so that they can live vicariously through him, or for most heterosexual women, so that they can live vicariously through his lucky girlfriend. Last night he was spotted having an intimate dinner out with said girlfriend at Chinese restaurant Mr. Chow. Kirstie Alley and Jackie Collins were there as well, and were tweeting excitedly about seeing George. Mum's the word so far on how he will celebrate today, but judging by parties from past years with VIP guest lists (including a 47th birthday bash hosted by Giorgio Armani) one can expect no less for the man's 50th. On his 48th the rumor was that he had a little too much fun and drank too much. But who's judging? He definitely deserves it. Happy birthday, George Clooney!
