An Andy Warhol Liz Taylor portrait sold at auction for $26.9 million. The silkscreen's official name is Liz #5 (1963). Phillips de Pury & Co. in Manhattan was the auction house that sold the Warhol.
At the auction where the stunning Liz Taylor portrait was sold, there were three other pieces by Andy Warhol--Flowers, Third Eye and Witch. The works of art fetched $8,146,500, $7,026,500 and $2,658,500, respectively.
Hedge fund financier Steve Cohen offered the piece at the auction, which gained some attention prior to the sale. The picture is a silkscreen of ink and acrylic on linen, and is truly a work of art just for itself in addition to the fact that it was of such a famous and beloved actress. Liz #5 was part of a 13-piece series featuring the celebrity.
It's no surprise that the Liz Taylor portrait went for a stunning amount, with the recent death of the late actress; plus, the painting is lovely. As large as the price was, even the Great Dane didn't fetch the Warhol painting record though. That honor belongs to Green car crash-Green burning car I (1963), which sold for an astounding $71 million.
It is amazing that this famous Andy Warhol painting fetched such a high price at auction. There is no doubt that the world is just now adjusting to the loss of Elizabeth Taylor. It is a wonderful thing that her beauty lives on in works of art such as this one.
