Singer Whitney Houston has very recently been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. She has emphysema, and if she doesn't quit smoking, it will likely wind up killing her.
According to a report from Popeater, some people are now questioning the role this illness has played in her recently canceled shows and much less-than-stellar performances in the past year or two.
Whitney Houston launched a comeback tour in 2009, on the heels of supposedly beating her addiction to drugs. The first album she had recorded in seven years came out at that time, too. The concerts didn't pan out. She either canceled them or received poor reviews, because quite honestly, she sounded horrible. She was hospitalized for upper respiratory infections on more than one occasion.
Emphysema is also referred to as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. It makes it very difficult for sufferers to breathe. Its most prevalent cause is cigarette smoking.
Whitney Houston has battled many demons in recent years. If she doesn't tackle this one head on, however, it could kill her. She needs to get on a strict regimen of medicine and exercise, and completely ditch the cigarettes.
Whitney has one daughter with ex Bobby Brown. Bobbi Christina Brown just emerged from her own stint in rehab. Is she possibly headed down the same path her mother took? Hopefully her mother will get her act together so as to serve as an example to her daughter.
If managed properly, Whitney Houston can live with emphysema or COPD for quite some time. It could, however, cost her whatever small bits and pieces may remain of her singing career.
