Jason Aldean didn't score any awards he was nominated for this time, but he did take country music in a new direction Wednesday night. Aldean performed his hit country song, "Dirt Road Anthem" at the 2011 CMT Music Awards with veteran rapper Ludacris. The song closed the award show that aired June 8 at 8/7 p.m. CST.
Aldean says he and Ludacris have similar backgrounds growing up in Georgia. Aldean confirmed earlier in the week that he's been a big fan of Ludacris and looked forward to the performance.
Country music proved that it is really trying to branch out with other appearances by not-so-country artists including Sheryl Crow and Justin Bieber. The show was hosted by singer/songwriter Kid Rock, who began his music career in the '90s with albums that were far from country. Rock also performed at the awards.
It's hard to say how fans will ultimately react to the Jason Aldean and Ludacris remix, but the crowd certainly looked pleased. Taylor Swift is an example of how branching out from country has helped its success and perhaps Jason Aldean is trying her method out. Needless to say, Swift was a winner, garnering the Video of the Year Award for her pop-influenced "Mine" video.
