While the world waits for Kim Kardashian's weekend wedding, the Kardashian sisters are hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons--they've been accused of copying one of their Kardashian Kollection designs!
Their debut collection of designer bags was launched through Sears.com last week, and although it initially received a great deal of support, it is now in the press for all the wrong reasons.
Monica Botkier has sent Sears a cease and desist letter, demanding that they stop selling a $94 leopard print bag which she claims is too similar to her own $600 Clyde design bag, for which she owns copyright.
The Clyde bag has been the statement piece of Monica's collection since 2003, and it's shape is trademarked. It does have some striking similarities with the Kardashian's bag, including the placement of two diagonal zips.
On her website, Monica wrote; "Ironically we just discovered below how our Botkier Clyde was simply copied by Kardashian Kollection for Sears. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery but we don't think so... In a case like this, its upsetting because it's a trademark shape for us.... it's a lot more complicated because it's hard for independent designers to do anything against mass retailers or megabrands. It really calls attention to what Steven Kolb for the Council of Fashion Designers of America are really working towards - it's not necessarily about sticking on a fake label, you are actually taking someone's design idea."
"This definitely hurts people in the industry and it makes it more difficult that can't protect it by law. The CDFA is working on trying to change these laws and make designs more protected."
No official statement has been released by Sears or the Kardashians, but the bag has been removed from sale. Although whether this is an admittance of guilt or simply avoiding trouble, is difficult to say.
The Kardashian Kollection is full of things you'd expect to find in the siblings wardrobe - leopard print, high heels, suits and of course, anything figure hugging! The collection hits shops properly on August 25th, but if you managed to get your hands on the infamous leopard print bag when the preview was released, you might now have your hands on a Kardashian limited edition original!
