Angelina Jolie recently revealed that she and Brad Pitt share an open relationship. In an extremely candid interview with Das Neue Blatt, the Salt star admitted that she and Brad rejected the whole concept of monogamy a long time ago.
"I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship," Angelina said. "It's worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards. Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other."
While Angelina Jolie's attitude towards sexual relationships is a refreshingly realistic and humanistic one, it does raise one interesting and highly problematic question. If the Jolie-Pitt partnership is open, then why has she reportedly been so vociferously opposed to the flirtation between Brad Pitt and production assistant Lara Marsden on the set of World War Z? Even to the point of threatening Lara to stay away from Brad or else? Is La Jolie incapable of practicing what she preaches? Or did her emotions momentarily get the better of her logic and intelligence?
There is one other possibility, however. The majority of open relationships are open only in purely physically sexual terms. In other words, both partners are free to have casual sex outside the relationship as long as there is no emotional involvement. Does Angelina Jolie's reported near hysterical jealousy over Brad's attentions to Marsden mean that she fears his attraction to the sexy P.A. could become more than purely physical?
At any rate, open relationships—married and otherwise—are wonderful as long as the ground rules are explicitly defined and both parties are equally comfortable with the arrangement. Just ask that other "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have been rumored to maintain an open marriage for years—even though they've denied it.
Oh well, only time will tell what happens to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Or to Mr. & Mrs. Smith for that matter.
