A Lady Gaga Britney Spears kiss came within a mustache's breadth from happening at last night's VMAs. And yes, mustache's breadth is the proper description of how close they came, given Gaga's scrufulous, masculine alter-ego Jo Calderone.
Nearly reenacting the oft-remembered smooch between Spears and Madonna at the 2003 VMAs, Lady Gaga and Britney came together after Spears accepted the Michael Jackson "Video Vanguard" award from Gaga - who was still very much in character as Jo Calderone. Spears seemed to be the one to draw back first (and who could blame her, given Jo's haggard appearance), stating "Done that already," referring to the episode with Madonna.
"It was interesting, her character," Spears said afterwards about the encounter with the Fame Monster, explaining their near kiss, "We got onstage and we felt it out." But Britney decided that once was enough.
Instead, Spears just smiled (awkwardly) and accepted her award. Gaga/Jo, to his credit, played it off, in true ugly greaser fashion, shrugging his shoulders and saying he did not want to upset Gaga. It was just one of many weirdly memorable moments from the show.
Ah, how America's morals have progressed. What's next for the 2012 VMAs? Bestiality? Gaga will provide the meat.
