It appears that United States President Barack Obama is following in the footsteps of pop stars Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. This might sound like a strange statement to make, but it's true.
Today, on September 11, 2011, on the tenth anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11, President Barack Obama has achieved a feat no other male American has thus far - Obama became the first male American, the third person in the world, and the first politician to accumulate 10,000,000 Twitter followers.
It is not easy to reach 10 million followers - even Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and Britney Spears have yet to achieve that goal, although they are not very far away and will likely surpass Barack Obama in the very near future. While those just mentioned celebrities are all within a half million followers of the President, Obama can rest easy knowing that it will be a very long time before he loses his status as politician with the most Twitter followers. Next in line is Dalai Lama, who, with 2,300,000 followers isn't even close.
Lady Gaga still has the most Twitter followers of anyone - as of earlier today, Gaga had 13,391,866 followers. Justin Bieber is still well ahead of President Barack Obama with 12,533,297 followers.
Barack Obama isn't always the person behind the tweeting, however. His staff helps him keep up with the tweeting often. Technically, as it states at the top of Obama's Twitter account, the President's account "is run by ##Obama2012 campaign staff. Tweets from the President are signed -BO."
