Is Justin Bieber in jail? No, but he certainly feels that at least one senator from Minnesota should be. Yep, while Justin is busy spreading the holiday cheer with the release of his new Christmas album, he is also trying to protect "the next" Bieber.
Why does Justin Bieber think Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar needs to be locked up? She is sponsoring a piece of legislation that would have made what Justin did to become famous a felony.
The bill, titled the "Commercial Felony Streaming Act," would make it not just illegal but a felony to stream copyrighted material online in places such as YouTube and Facebook.
Ok, it makes sense that no one except the artist should be able to upload their own song and make a profit from it. Justin Bieber's beef, though, is that the new law goes a step further. It will be illegal for a fan to sing an artist's song (covering the song) and post it online.
Bieber rose to fame by covering other artists' songs, recording music videos, and placing them on YouTube as a child. This was how he was discovered. This is where Justin has a bone to pick with Sen. Amy Klobuchar:
[Senator Klobuchar] needs to know that I'm saying she needs to be locked up, put away in cuffs! People need to have the freedoms ... People need to be able to sing songs. I just think that's ridiculous.
He knows he was discovered singing Usher songs, and he doesn't mind his fans singing his tunes. He is clearly still selling plenty of CDs. He would hate to see a fan land in jail because they were singing one of his songs.
I check YouTube all the time and watch people singing my songs... I think it's awesome.
The representative for the Senator says that the bill is only intended to stop piracy and protect the artists and that Justin should basically buzz off and stick to singing, tweeting, and Selena Gomez and leave the legal stuff to someone else... after all, he's Canadian.
