The story of Aishwarya Rai getting married to a tree before her official marriage to Abhishek Bachchan is old hat. It was widely reported on in the months leading up to her wedding and while the Bachchan family thoroughly denied it there were some media sources who stood by their stories and claimed that the tree marriage did in fact take place.
Now Amitabh Bachchan has reignited the story by arguing with a fan on a social networking site. Amitabh claimed that he had confronted the editorial staff of the Times of India group over their publication of the story and the fan replied back to him "Sirji what was that Manglik pooja at sankatmochan mandir varanasi .. Even i hold some pics of them .. What was it ?"
For those shaking their heads in confusion over the entire episode here's a refresher: astrologers play a large role in some parts of Indian society and it is said that the Bachchan family takes astrological readings very seriously. It was discovered that Aishwarya Rai is a manglik, which is seen as very unlucky. Mangliks are said to make poor wives as their marriages are destined to fail and there is some danger to the spouse, who is likely to die early in the marriage. It may seem silly but the Bachchans, as the story was told, didn't want to take any chances and so had Aishwarya Rai marry a tree, thus cursing that marriage and leaving her subsequent marriage to Abhishek Bachchan unharmed.
Amitabh vehemently denied the story yet again on Twitter today, angrily replying to the fan's question about the manglik puja with "what mangalik pooja ?? rubbish ! going to temple does not mean mangalik pooja .. false stories and nothing else."
It's unfortunate that Amitabh chose to engage with the fan over the issue. Aishwarya's manglik status and (probably fictitious) marriage to a tree were effectively buried. It's unclear why Amitabh would want to ressurect the old rumors. One thing's for certain though--when it comes to Aishwarya Rai Amitabh always rises to her defense. She's lucky to have such a doting father-in-law!
