Selena Gomez will be spending some time in jail soon! But don't worry—she's only going to be imprisoned for the movie Spring Breakers.
By donning a prison jumpsuit, Selena will have something in common with her boyfriend Justin Bieber—he also got to spend some time in jail when he played a troubled teen on CSI.
But while the Biebs playing a bad boy might have seemed like a stretch, Selena is really going to have to show a different side of herself in Spring Breakers.
The actress became a star on Disney's kid show The Wizards of Waverly Place before moving on to the family-friendly movie Ramona and Beezus and then the romantic comedy Monte Carlo. Her latest movie appearance was a small cameo in The Muppets.
However, the next step she's taking in her career is going to be something unlike she's ever done before. According to Us Weekly, Harmony Korine is directing Spring Breakers. Korine wrote the script for the NC-17 rated movie Kids, which took a look at the sex and drug-filled lives of a group of teens in NYC during the era of HIV in the 90s. The movies he has directed, which include Gummo and Julien Donkey-Boy, are often full of bizarre and controversial images—he's featured blackface in more than one of his movies, a disturbing scene showing the drowning of a cat in Gummo, and a very odd group of freaks in the film Trash Humpers. His movies have gained a bit of a cult following because of how weird they are.
So, needless to say, it's very hard to imagine Selena Gomez starring in one of his movies. But the storyline for Spring Breakers doesn't sound too out there for Selena at first: a group of friends rob a restaurant in hopes of funding a spring break trip. If written right, this could be turned into a comedy. However, the girls end up in jail, where a drug dealer bails them out in exchange for them working for him.
The movie is being described as "gritty" and "more adult" than anything Selena has ever done. Here's what she said about the project in her own words: "It's a different character than I have ever played before. It's a different kind of vibe I think than people are used to seeing me in. What you're going to see is more raw, I think. It's going to be raw and more about acting."
So it seems that Selena Gomez is going to try to leave her Disney days behind by getting gritty. However, with her baby face, it's just so hard to imagine her in a dark movie that will probably end up getting an R rating—it seems like there will be sex, drugs, and violence in Spring Breakers. She'll be joined in the 2013 movie by fellow Disney star Vanessa Hudgens, who has also been working hard to shed her teen star image. Emma Roberts and James Franco will round out the all-star cast.
So are you looking forward to Selena trying to do something so serious and potentially twisted? Or do you think she should shift her focus to becoming a rom-com queen?
