Ricki Lake Voices Opinion About Natural Childbirth

I believe if a woman is checked a few times by a real Dr. and is asurred she is physically able to bear a child and the baby seems okay it's alright to have natural childbirth. I wouldn't agree that a you teen age girl would try this though.

Some people don't "need" to be in a hospital. My 3rd and 4th birth I did and it would have been irresponsible for me to have not been there. On my 3rd child his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck.. and both children were induced..

I think it's great she informs people of the options, but some times there are reasons a hospital can be better for that one person who does needs help for themselves or their babies. One of my friends had a stroke when she gave birth and one of my grandsons had a stroke when he was being born... no one had an idea these things would happen... and it was great that they were in a hospital when these things happened. When it's a stroke, time is important.

I had a "home" birth with a midwife when i was 20. with my irregular labor pains, and the amount of time my water was broken, i would have had a c-section, guaranteed, if i had given birth in a hospital. the difference between hospitals and midwife births, is that the doctors at the hospitals are trained in the mechanics of things. in that everybody is the same and if this happens, this action has to take place. True, this isn't the case with All doctors, but with my experience with the 2 doctors i had before i chose my midwife, most are. Midwives are trained in the art of aiding a woman in giving birth. they are more than qualified to handle healthy natural pregnancy and birth care. I have several friends who had their children with the same midwife i used, significantly younger than i was. Midwives are trained to observe the mother as an individual. they know when there is a real emergency, and when to wait it out. a good midwife would not hesitate to turn a mother towards more in depth care at a real hospital should she show any signs of a pregnancy complication that considers her "high risk". that's the beauty of midwives. they get to know you as a person and are always looking out for you. they're not in this profession because business is always good. they're not in this business because they make a lot of money. they're in the business because they have a true, honest to God passion for birth and a woman's abilities to bring life into this world. you get all the same tests from a midwife that you would get from the average doc you would go to for a hospital birth. many people don't understand that. I'm very thankful for the technology we have, for all those high risk mothers out there who can't birth successfully on their own, but i really believe in the power of natural birth. of birthing at home. in most cases, a baby isn't an emergency, and hospitals are meant for emergencies. i never set foot in one if i don't have to.

I a c-section, and I'm not ashamed of it. It's what my doctor said would be best, since I had gestational diabetes and they were concerned that he would be too big to be born comfortably naturally. I said to her, "Whatever is best for the baby." That's all that really matters.
No one gets a gold star on their record for "natural birth". Why go through extraordinary pain if you don't have to? My mom had an epidural with me, and I turned out better than fine. If moms want to do this, terrific. I only oppose the ones who tout it as "so much better for the baby." Hogwash.
I know someone who had THREE DAYS of labor before the midwife sent her to the hospital for, ultimately, a c-section. Thank God mom and baby survived.
