Rooney Mara has dished that she wore a specially-made merkin and got a real nipple piercing for her nude scenes in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Rooney is set to become the next big thing since her acting in the movie remake has already received so much praise, but playing Lisbeth Salander certainly wasn't easy, especially since the character has so many nude scenes in the movie.
But luckily Rooney got to be a little bit covered up—she got to wear a specially-made merkin for the scenes that she showed skin in.
Merkins are pubic wigs that are often worn by actresses who shoot nude scenes set in time periods when women didn't shave "down there." Evan Rachel Wood and Kate Winslet are a few other celebs that have talked about wearing the odd accessories.
During an interview with Metro.us, Rooney Mara was asked what one part of Lisbeth might get overlooked in the movie, and she had this to say about how much detail went into creating her look: "There was a lot of discussion that went into my merkin for the movie, because I was naked quite a lot. And I don't think a lot of people will notice all of the attention that went into that. But there was a lot of discussions around that."
So what kind of "discussions" were there? And why couldn't Rooney just wear any old merkin? Here's what she said about the design of the bit of wardrobe that provided her with a bit of modesty: "Well, you know, in the book she's meant to have strawberry-blonde hair originally and she dyes it, so we had a special merkin made that was, you know, strawberry-blonde so that it would fit." At least she wasn't required to rock the real deal and have it dyed (wonder if Noomi Rapace wore a merkin in the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?).
Rooney did have to do something else extremely difficult to complete her transformation—she got a real nipple piercing. According to MTV, this is what she had to say about her other accessory: "I'm naked quite a lot in the movie, and I thought, she has it in the book, and she should have it [in the movie]. Because of all the tattoos and the makeup and the piercings, and the physical transformations my body has to go through, it would always feel sort of like I was in costume, even if I was naked. It just felt like a good one to get—a necessary one to get."
So David Fincher certainly paid attention to every little detail of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but it remains to be seen if Rooney Mara's nude scenes pay off—the film hits theaters on December 20.
