An attempt to boycott Kim Kardashian and her family just might be working -- sales of magazines featuring the Kardashian sisters could provide proof that the Kardashians just aren't as popular as they used to be.
The Kardashian sisters are incredibly popular tabloid targets, with stories about Kim's divorce and Kourtney Kardashian's pregnancy making the covers of the glossy magazines. However, the sisters haven't been helping holiday sales much.
According to the New York Post, sales of celeb magazines are significantly down this holiday season, and even the Kardashians aren't keeping them up.
Us Weekly's recent mag featuring Khloe Kardashian on the cover was one of its worst-selling issues of the year at around 500,000 copies, which is quite shocking for a mag that can sell over a million. Meanwhile Ok! Magazine's cover featuring Kim Kardashian and the line "What I didn't tell Kris" sold a measly 200,000 copies. This was also one of the worst-selling issues for the tabloid, which is somewhat surprising considering the cover's promise of secrets Kim kept from Kris Humphries.
Life & Style featured a story about Kim's "Revenge Romance" with Reggie Bush, but even that issue sold fewer copies than usual at 330,000 to 360,000 copies. So apparently very few people care about what Kim does with her love life now.
It seems that Kourtney Kardashian is currently the most popular Kardashian sister, because In Touch Weekly's cover featuring her along with the headline "Pregnant and Alone" sold 600,000 and 630,000 copies. Us Weekly's last issue featuring Kourtney also did fairly well.
It is to be noted that the magazines that didn't feature Kardashians on their covers also experienced slower sales, but the fact that the sisters couldn't keep sales higher could be seen as proof that their popularity is fading. Further evidence of their waning popularity comes in the form of a petition to boycott the family has managed to get 250,000 signatures - apparently there are a lot of people who don't want to keep up with the Kardashians.
Kourtney's pregnancy did seem to help spark a little more interest in the magazines featuring her on the cover, so it will be interesting to see if Kim Kardashian or Khloe Kardashian find some new way to hold their fans' attention. Moving to Dallas made Khloe the top trending topic on Yahoo! for awhile, so perhaps Lamar Odom playing for the Mavericks will prove to be a good thing for her as far as staying in the public eye goes. Plus fans will probably tune in to watch her and Rob Kardashian experience a bit of a culture shock (he's going to Dallas with her). She's also already planning to open a DASH store in Dallas so she has something to do on her reality show Khloe and Lamar, meaning the Kardashian brand will continue to expand.
So are dipping tabloid sales proof that the Kardashians are crashing, or will life events like pregnancies, new boyfriends, and big moves keep fans following their every move? Unfortunately it doesn't look like seen the last of them -- E! is planning up to four more reality shows about the family, and even if the older sisters do eventually fade, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner are waiting to take their places.
But what do you think - could this the beginning of the end for them?
