Lego Friends for Girls Stirs Controversy on Twitter

The popular toy giant Lego is launching a new product. The line called Lego Friends is trying to offer an option for girls. The new line is featuring lots of pink and little Lego women that have pretty hair and fancy pink shoes.Even the eyes have been made much more feminine and seem to have makeup on. Eek!

Lego Friends will be aimed at girls ages 5 and up. Although it is the holiday season and a perfect time to give a new toy, the company is waiting until the new year to launch the new Legos. Sounds like the company know this is a potential failure and waiting for the new year for Lego Friends to sink.

The new attempt at including girls in the world of Legos is pathetic. The characters created fall into the boring stereotypical animal-lover Mia, beautician Emma, pop star Andrea and "social-girl" Stephanie . Folks are not happy and the future of the Lego Friends line looks dim.

Lashing out on Twitter, it appears many share the sentiment that Legos have always been for girls.

"booo!!! I think girls can like Legos as they currently are. Girls can like a toy without it being pink." tweeted one woman.

It is a shame, but so true. Legos have been for both boys and girls for years now. Let it go Lego, girls do not always want pink!

I think it's so important that legos began marketing more towards girls as well!

I really hate when toys are pink. I have a 3 yr old daughter and a 1 yr old son, so her toys become his toys. Not that he can't play with pink toys, but I think gender neutral is best. Lego's are fun the way they are!

Mega Blocks have had girl-themed toys for years now. I don't see a problem with it except for the girl characters. Pop star? Social girl? Beautician? People gripe about Barbies but at least Barbie had options like Astronaut and Doctor.

That's cool. I have mixed feelings about Barbie, but I didn't know there were Astronaut & Doctor Barbies. That rocks! :)

There were more options years ago before it went the way of "Walkin' My Puppy" types of Barbies. I just saw a 'retro' Barbie, brand new, in Big Lots of the original 1967 Astronaut Barbie. I wanted it sooooo bad. lol

Barbie needs to bring more of that back. =)

I think it's great that Lego is marketing more to girls now. I always felt they were more for boys, but girls need toys to build with too. If they prefer the non-pink colours, that's always an option too. Also, Lego often waits till the next year to sell many items. I know this because my son complains every year that he has to wait till next year to get lots of the Lego stuff he wants.

If its good enough for barbie, and other doll makers, why can't it be good enough for lego? They know (most) girls are going to be clamoring more for pretty pink girlie legos than the super awesome ninja or dragon ones.

Personally....I wish they had more super awesome ninja and dragon legos when I was younger. I never did much care for the girlie stuff.
