Miley Cyrus has been named Role Model of the Year by Hollywood Life. Really? Did she really set that great an example for young people during 2011? Sure, she did some impressive work for her Haitian charity, but does Miley really have the kind of morals and standards that make a good role model?
According to Hollywood Life, the winner was determined by fan votes. And that's actually a bit of a relief. If Miley is truly the bona fide role model for 2011 for today's young people, then people should maybe fear for 2012's standards!
Now this isn't meant to bash Miley. After all, there are far worse role models one could emulate. For example, there is Lindsay Lohan or Ke$ha. They actually make Miley look pretty tame.
But Miley's year wasn't really filled with the sorts of actions that parents want their kids looking to as fine examples. There was the bong incident where Miley smoked salvia and laughed about it in a video clip. Then there were the multiple photos in which she posed leaving very little to the imagination. More recently, however, Miley Cyrus joked about being stoned in yet another video clip, and even though she claims it was a joke--many adults didn't find it to be too funny.
There are some other extremely good role models who were in the running for this honor. Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift were all in the running. Now these three are the kinds of celebrities most parents really like. They exude a sense of responsibility, humility, kindness and even a sense of innocence.
What it really boils down to is that more Miley Cyrus fans cast votes in this Hollywood Life competition than fans of Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift. And no--Miley certainly isn't the worst role model around. But do you think she deserves the honor of being named Role Model of the Year?
