Hip hop stars Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are just a few of the celebs on Twitter who have tweeted recent messages about Don Cornelius. The legendary host of "Soul Train" was found dead early on Wednesday of an apparent suicide.
Don Cornelius was 75 years old upon his death and a major celebrity icon to many people. A recent article from Billboard has a look at several stars from R&B, hip hop and rap music who have remembered Cornelius. Among them are also Diddy, Ice Cube, MC Hammer, Wyclef, and Russell Simmons.
While Rihanna and Nicki Minaj tweeted a short "R.I.P Don C," or "R.I.P. Mr. Cornelius," other stars had lengthier messages. For example, MC Hammer tweeted:
"It meant more to me to perform on #SoulTrain than to win a Grammy .. Loved U So Much Don.. Thank U RIP #DonCornelius"
Rapper Bun B, of UGK and solo fame, tweeted:
"God bless Don Cornelius. Soul Train was often imitated but never duplicated. Staple of millions of homes on Saturday mornings. RIP. #salute"
Rapper Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest mentioned how inspirational Cornelius was to many, with his tweet:
"When I did soul train ill never 4get Don Cornelius came 2 me after rehearsal n said "you are a star! A giant!" No don u R! RIP"
Cornelius clearly played a major role in the lives of many stars as they were growing up. He was considered an icon as the host of "Soul Train" and several of the celebs tweeting about him have shared moments on stage at his show. His tragic suicide has brought shock to many stars, but also the realization that they are where they are today thanks to others like him.
Rest in peace to Don Cornelius, and deepest condolences to his friends, family and fans whose lives he touched.
