It wasn't an easy assignment for crazy-haired rocker Colton Dixon, but by the close of the American Idol 2012 top 13 performance show on March 7, he'd proven himself capable of handling a Stevie Wonder classic.
As the Tennessee native prepared to perform "Lately" for America's votes, he met with the week's mentors, Mary J Blige and producer Jimmy Iovine, who offered up tips to help the singer hone his craft. After a rocky start, the duo asked Colton to perform an original song, just to get a feel for who he is, and they were impressed with what they saw and heard. Jimmy encouraged him to rely on his "vulnerability" and consider it an asset in the competition, and Mary claimed that he could be a real winner if he's able to do his thing.
The rocker boy looked slick in skinny black pants, a white button down shirt, and jacket as he gently worked his way through the performance at show time. He was truly a lady-killer.
Steven Tyler called the performance "unreal" and "outstanding." Jennifer Lopez admitted that singing Stevie Wonder was probably harder for Colton than most, but called the performance "great" nonetheless. Randy Jackson said it "wasn't picture perfect" technically, but that the last eight bars were "flawless." He especially appreciated the falsetto note at the end.
As he shared the voting information, host Ryan Seacrest joked that he could "hear the girls screaming in Hacienda Heights" and told Colton to give America "that look" one more time.
Will Colton Dixon's special look gain America's votes, or will he find himself the odd man out following the American Idol 2012 top 13 results show? Tune in on Thursday and see.
