Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, has done it again. The coral-colored skinny jeans she wore to a UK Olympic hockey team practice—she was playing, not watching—has caused a line of similar jeans sales to rise by 88%. She looked positively adorable with a hockey stick in her hands, and her long hair flying, and she caught the attention of women everywhere—not just hockey fans. Duchess Catherine, the Huffington Post reminds readers and Kate-watchers, used to play field hockey, but that doesn't matter. Fans can't wait to get their hands on the jeans.
The retail frenzy she is setting off here, is called the "Duchess Effect." What Kate Middleton wears, people buy. Immediately, in all sizes. Her positive effect on the British economy is as staggering as it was—at the start—unexpected. This time, the duchess has created a huge, growing trend toward colored denim.
"Wearing bright colours lifts us all and now we have the royal seal of approval for coloured denim from Kate Middleton," says a fashion expert from one of the lucky stores, carrying a knockoff of Kate's choice (for about $20). "We know this is going to be the hot trend this summer."
Of course, colored denim was already a hot 2012 trend. If not, she probably would not have worn it. But Kate Middleton has brought the whole thing mainstream.
Her actual coral jeans are JBrand, and they sell for about $169. Not bad for designer jeans. Now, if they could only make everyone look as good in their pair, as the duchess does in hers.
