Giuliana Rancic and her husband, Bill Rancic, of E! fame announced that they are expecting a baby later this year yesterday. Today, the couple opened up about what it was like choosing a surrogate to go on this life-changing journey with them.
Though the baby is biologically theirs, having been conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF) with one of Giuliana's pre-treatment frozen eggs (what a mouthful!), the pair did need the help of a gestational surrogate—a woman who basically lends her own body to house the growing baby. So how exactly do you choose who will be a part of such an important—and personal—task?
"Once we met her it was an instinct we had," Giuliana Rancic told People Magazine. "We could tell she was a great person."
Also important to Bill and Giuliana was that they would be allowed to be intimately involved in the entire pregnancy—including attending each doctor's appointment with the surrogate, whose identity has been kept secret.
"It's important to us to see the development and growth," says Bill. "At the end of the day, it's our baby. Genetically it's ours. It's our embryo. We feel very connected."
Though it is a situation that would likely be awkward at times to navigate, it seems that Bill and Giuliana Rancic have made it work well for them, and are happy to finally be getting the baby they've so badly wanted in the past few years.
