Kate Middleton and her husband—that would be the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge—are no longer considered newlyweds, since their first wedding anniversary is this Sunday. But they are certainly the couple to watch, even more than they were a year ago. From new names and a new residence to filling out their family (okay, with only a small dog, so far), the two have captivated world attention, says E! Online, and come through smiling.
Take the wedding, itself. The new
Duchess Catherine wowed the guests, both in person and on TV, almost as much as did her sister, with the famous bum shot. But Kate Middleton smiled, and hearts were won. The couple hid their honeymoon in the Seychelles just a bit, putting it off a few days and retreating from the cameras for more than a week.
Then the public appearances began—with American President Obama and his wife Michelle right up front. Would Kate Middleton fold in the limelight? She did not. She even introduced off-the rack dresses, and the "Kate Effect" took off. Wimbledon, polo matches, birthday celebrations and grocery stores. Viewers might have thought the duchess had grown up in the public eye, as did William.
In June the duke and duchess took off for Canada and the U.S. Kate Middleton told the world she did not need a "dresser", and she proved it by wowing the world again. Jeans and cowboy hats. Gauzy dresses and sequins. Gossip even says, in L.A., the royal couple outshone the stars.
The charity sponsorships began, and the Duchess of Cambridge met with groups, from military wives to Women in Hedge Funds—from children in school to the wealthiest investors. Kate Middleton emerged smiling. UNICEF, BAFTA, art and education. She even did a few events all on her own, including a hockey game. No problem.
Probably the stickiest topic—when would Kate be pregnant?—was handled with the same calm demeanor. The world—and all of Britain—will just have to wait.
The anniversary is this weekend. Hope Prince William and Kate Middleton get a little privacy. Kate will be smiling.
