Model Valeria Lukyanova, also known as the "Living Barbie Doll," gained plenty of internet fame over the past week. However, due to recent media scrutiny the Ukrainian sensation has posted a video response to her critics.
A recent report from IBTimes.com indicates that Valeria has been getting plenty of flack over her almost perfect "doll-like" appearance. Some have slammed the model for going too far to become flawless, when part of beauty is about seeing imperfections as beautiful.
However, Lukyanova has felt the need to respond and defend herself, not only as a model, but as a humanitarian, with other talents besides going all out to look good for the camera. The video below gives her response, albeit not in English. Still the website IBTimes has provided translations in their latest article. Valeria basically brings forth the message that it's easier for people to agree with the negative gossip rather than present their own unique opinions. She also mentions that she has been an opera singer, composer, and leader of seminars and workshops on astral travel.
The "Living Barbie Doll" came to light due to media scrutiny from the likes of Huffington Post and ABC News, but does Valeria Lukyanova really need to defend herself? She chose to look a certain way and to have extra work done to get there. She's chosen to be a model, but is also saying she has other talents. A slightly older video on her YouTube channel shows her singing talents off. She claims she also does some work to help people become more spiritually enlightened.
The aspect of this that may have some people upset is that if more and more models do this, it may further objectify women. Not only that, but it could send a very harmful message to young women that they have to make sure they look as perfect as possible. Hopefully this won't become the prevailing message that is sent forth by Valeria Lukyanova's looks. She certainly brings to mind the old saying "beauty is only skin deep," leaving people to wonder why some go to the lengths they do to make themselves more beautiful.
What do you think of "The Living Barbie Doll" Valeria? Is she just enjoying 15 minutes of fame right now, or will she end up becoming more and more famous? Is she sending a good or bad message, or none at all?
