Kate Middleton made a beautiful bride, and her crowning glory was her fabulous, shining hair—holding up a tiara borrowed from her new grandmother, the Queen of England. Now the man who secured that tiara, as well as helped to achieve those soft, glossy blow-out curls, is speaking out about the most exciting day in his working life, reports Daily Mail. James Pryce is the stylist behind Duchess Catherine's hair. It took unbelievable practice.
Pryce, at the Richard Ward salon, has been cutting and styling for the Middleton family for about seven years, but on November 16, his new career began. The
palace advisers called and asked him to come to Clarence House to style "Miss Middleton's hair," for her official engagement photo. Kate Middleton had requested his presence.
"Of course I accepted immediately," the stylist says. "Lots of thoughts went through my head and I admit I did let my mind run away with me - I couldn't help but think about the wedding and whether I would be lucky enough to be asked to do that."
He was, and the rest is history, except that now Kate-watchers know how much effort went into the wedding-day style. Beginning in January, Pryce practiced and perfected his "demi-chignon" style, trying it out on dozens of models and assistants. Meanwhile, customers were already clamoring for the "Kate Middleton blow-out," and every look-alike in London seemed to book an appointment at the salon. Her hair, though, is special—thick and glossy on its own.
Pryce's boss, Richard Ward, learned the style too, in case of some disaster. "I knew where every pin went, just in case James had food poisoning or something awful like that and I had to do Kate's hair on the day," the salon owner said.
Everyone remembers how successful the stylists were, because the wedding was hugely successful. "I had gone to her suite to do one final check," Pryce remembers. "I went in and I was just bowled over. I was like, 'Wow! You look amazing.' The vision of her was just incredible."
Later, Pryce was called back to Clarence House, to take the tiara out. The new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry, were watching replays of the wedding on television.
And months later, James Pryce was the only "attendant" Kate Middleton took along, on the Canada/California trip. She looked beautiful. It seems Pryce's new career is secure.
