Will British boy band One Direction be one-upped by a new U.S. band? If Simon Cowell has his way, that's exactly what might happen. He reportedly told a U.S. radio station he wants an American band to "take on" the immensely popular British band.
According to a report from EntertainmentWise, Simon Cowell said during this radio interview that he expects to see an influx of boy bands and even girl bands, too, to start climbing their way up the music charts.
"We had a group called One Direction who were on X Factor UK a couple of years ago," he joke
d.
Cowell went on to say that he'd love to find the group that could basically blow the boy band—comprised of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson—out of the water.
"It would be great to find the next NSync, the next Backstreet Boys, the next Destiny's Child on X Factor—there is a gap in the market right now for a group like that from America," Cowell said.
Do you think Simon Cowell is seriously going to do something to thwart the What Makes You Beautiful singers popularity in the U.S.? Why would he do such a thing? Isn't he the reason the band is as popular as they are right now?
It just doesn't seem to make much sense to one-up One Direction. What do you suppose this is all about?
