Aishwarya Rai has a new role, though the part doesn't involve memorizing lines or fitting into crazy costumes.
In fact her new role isn't film-related at all. Aishwarya has agreed to work on behalf of a United Nations initiative in support of girl children, and being a mother to a little girl of her own it isn't hard to imagine where her interest in the subject came from!
Aishwarya was recently a guest at a lavish dinner party thrown by Mukesh Ambani to honor visiting United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. During the dinner (and the round table discussion that preceded it) the Secretary General was seen in serious conversation with Aishwarya, paying far more attention to her than he did any of the other Bollywood big shots who attended the event. And while the "story of the day" (more like week, really) that came out of her attendance that night was sadly that of her weight gain and "double chin" photo, the real story of interest should be the work she's agreed to do on behalf of the U.N.
The plight of the girl child is a common social theme in India, with sex-selective abortion and infanticide causing the country to exhibit a highly skewed male:female ratio. Girl children are seen in some parts of the country as undesirable, and those who are kept are often denied full educations by families who desire only to marry them off quickly. It is for this reason that Aishwarya and Abhishek were lauded when they declared that not only had they been hoping for a girl but that they were thrilled when they became parents to a daughter (Beti B--or Aaradhya--who is now just shy of six months old).
Aishwarya is an excellent choice for such a role--she is already active in a variety of charitable organizations and she's proven to be a reliable and successful spokesperson. If she can lend a bit of star power to as worthy a cause as girls' education then all the better. Here's hoping the media will pay as much attention to this important work as they have to the utterly unimportant issue of Aishwarya's weight.
