Aimee Copeland has had a harrowing month since she contracted a rare flesh-eating disease on the 1st of this month. Following a zip-lining accident where the line broke, forcing her to fall into rocky waters, she contracted the dangerous bacteria through a cut on her leg. Since then, doctors have amputated her left leg and both of her hands to prevent the disease from spreading to her vital organs.
Despite all the horrors Aimee has endured as a result of a freak accident, she hasn't quit fighting to regain her health. Fortunately, it seems that the strength of her will is beginning to pay off. Copeland is now breathing on her own without the aid of a ventilator, an excellent sign that she is on the road to recovery.
According to Aimee Copeland's father, she is keeping her spirits up and not giving into despair. "Aimee is being Aimee," he wrote on Facebook. "She's cracking jokes, speaking frankly, displaying her usual early morning grumpiness and she has been off of the ventilator for over 10 hours." Few people could maintain a sunny outlook when faced with such a terrible twist of fate.
Aimee has inspired her town of Snellville to give back to the community and show its support for the tough times ahead to regain her health. Blood drives and fundraisers have been organized in Copeland's honor, reportedly surprising Aimee with all the prayers and help her townspeople offer.
