Mark Zuckerberg and long-time girlfriend Priscilla Chan had a small, intimate wedding on Saturday, which abounded with sentimental details. Those details included a gorgeous but dainty ruby wedding ring—a "very simple ruby", Hollywood Life calls it. Just because the wedding came as a surprise, with no pre-announcement—even to the guests—doesn't mean every detail was not carefully planned.
The tab intimated that
any ring short of the infamous Kim Kardashian diamond rock was something of a cheap-out. But consider the differences. Priscilla Chan Zuckerberg is a Harvard grad, and a recent graduate of medical school. She plans to be a working pediatrician, who will be washing her hands many times a day, wearing latex gloves, and touching children. She won't just sit around being Mark Zuckerberg's wife all her life. What would she do with a huge diamond? Put it in a special safe every morning?
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian is Kim Kardashian. Look how long that whole thing lasted. Enough said.
The ring has an oval ruby flanked by two diamonds, which flash white on a television screen. Mark Zucherberg is said to have designed it himself. In a wedding loaded with sentiment—favorite foods, chocolate mice—that should be enough. But in addition, the bride is Chinese-American, and Asian cultures respect the ruby as a symbol of wisdom. Wisdom might mean more to the two of them than any flashy diamond.
A ruby also symbolizes good fortune. Maybe Kim Kardashian should have had one of those. Mark Zuckerberg did just the right thing.
