Kate Middleton, who has been fondly dubbed the Discount Duchess, has just received some of the highest praise available from her rather uptight in-law, Queen Elizabeth. While some are a little miffed Kate would have the audacity to act like a commoner and wear her clothing more than once, the majority of folks are impressed by her thrifty ways. So is the Queen.
According to historian Roy Strong, the Queen can relate to Kate's thrifty ways and truly appreciates them. Strong refers to Elizabeth as a "make-do-and-mend queen," although you would never get that impression by looking at her impeccable clothing. Kate, or Catherine now, is not about to set a precedent that could ultimately cost her admirers. Strong reveals the Queen approves of Kate's thrifty ways and supports her position to avoid free high-end designer clothes.
The Duchess reportedly explained her position to a friend, "Times are tough—I cannot be expected to wear a new outfit for every royal engagement. I am not a fashion model." Kate obviously has a closet full of clothes, old and new. She has mastered the art of changing accessories to make an outfit that is 5-years-old, look new and stylish. Despite her efforts, professional style analysts manage to pull out photos of her wearing the same dress to another occasion.
The friend adds, "Changing outfits for every engagement is simply not practical or affordable and would send the wrong message." People can relate to Kate Middleton because she has managed to maintain an air of normalcy despite her royal status. Most women cannot buy a dress, wear it one time, and never think about it again. Kate is far too practical for such wasteful antics.
