On Duets for June 13, John Legend awarded Kelly Clarkson a surprise. A musical surprise. The Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter decided to mentor one of his two amateur singers in a song made famous by the original American Idol.
He worked with Meleana Brown during party song week on the ABC reality show to sing "Since U Been Gone," one of Kelly's anthems that is a tough tune to conquer for any singer, professional or otherwise.
Still, Brown did well and John Legend, who definitely wasn't in his comfort zone with this particular genre, was right there giving it his all. Together, these two really crooned in what turned out to be an entertaining number even though Meleana had some trouble hitting the high notes at certain times during the delivery.
Even so, judge Kelly Clarkson was happy hearing her song on the Duets stage, and even made a comment that said she would like to duet with John on that song someday. She also said that although Brown had pitch problems during her performance, she didn't think anything of that because she also has pitch problems when she takes this song to the stage as well.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Nettles was a bit disappointed that it wasn't one of her songs that was chosen by Legend to sing with Meleana. She praised the performance but she also called it a bit pitchy, at least at the beginning.
Still, these two really brought off an enjoyable number. But that wasn't enough tonight on Duets. As a result, Brown ended up at the low end of the leaderboard after she sang and, inevitably, she ended up having to sing for her life before the show wrapped and one of two singers was told this was the end of the line for that particular talent.
Sadly, that solo Brown sang simply didn't do it for the four judges, and so, after the votes were tallied, Brown was informed this was the end of her time on the show. Too bad because her performance with John was so much fun and she has an amazing voice that would never get old if she kept on singing for this particular program.
Oh well, that's the way the TV talent show's ball bounces. And so, on Duets, as John Legend shocked Kelly Clarkson by having his mentor sing one of her tunes with him, the surprise backfired because after that Meleana Brown was sent packing.
That said, do you think this was a fair assessment on the ABC show on Wednesday? Do you think she nailed "Since U Been Gone" or do you think she should have done better? Please contribute your thoughts and keep on watching Duets on ABC.
