After two successful seasons of the New York version, VH1's hit reality show returned last night with a new cast and a new city. The premiere proved that everything really isn't always fair in the Atlanta game of Love and Hip Hop.
Unlike so many of the other reality programs that fill up VH1's lineup, Mona Scott-Young's creation has a plotline that viewers can actually follow. Although producers try to keep in line with the program's theme by incorporating scenes that resemble a low-budget hip hop video, the result is a situational reality show filled with premeditated drama. The premiere season's main love triangle revolves around producer Stevie J, his artist Joseline Hernandez and his long-time girlfriend Mimi Faust. In a first meeting clearly orchestrated by show producers, Stevie J and Joseline are introduced to fellow cast mate and up and coming Trinidadian singer Karlie Redd. Reed wasted no time with telling Mimi of Rosalind and Stevie's playful banter. You can guess what happened next. The drama started and from the looks of the season trailer, it will continue over the next nine episodes.
Atlanta rapper Rasheeda Buckner got all of two lines in the season opener. Hopefully Love and Hip Hop Atlanta will present an opportunity to finally push the rapper into mainstream notoriety while also showcasing more of her beauty on-screen.
K. Michelle is clearly this show's version of Olivia. While her fight for the spotlight will help garner K. Michelle with comparisons to the former G-Unit diva, her honesty will hopefully help her quickly find the relatability factor that's needed to become a star.
VH1 has become infamous for introducing the world to outlandish reality stars. Momma Dee joins in the ranks of Flavor Flav, New York, Big Ang and Mama Jones. The relationship between her son, Atlanta rapper Lil' Scrappy, and his girlfriend Erica Dixon greatly resemble the Mama Jones and Chrissy plotline of the NY version of the show. The former pimp and drug dealer already has social media outlets buzzing with her hysterical quotes and upfront attitude. Only time will tell if her on-screen appeal will be enough to keep her a trending topic and get her new hustle greenlit for a second season.
