Abhishek Bachchan has made his most defiant statement yet in regards to the criticism being lobbied at his wife over her weight. Aishwarya Rai, as everyone knows, packed on the pounds after giving birth to her daughter, and rather than acknowledge that this is a natural part of motherhood the media has instead flown off the handle over it.
Aishwarya has been subject to some incredibly nasty press coverage in recent months. Cameras zoomed in on her every time she left her house and gossip websites breathlessly detailed how many chins she had during any given week. The criticism was (and continues to be) bordering on the pathological, and Abhishek has some strong words concerning it.
In defense of his wife Abhishek said "I think it's extremely insensitive. No one has the liberty to speak about her like they sometimes do. She's a public figure but people forget she's also a woman and now a mother. There's a line that's not to be crossed."
It remains to be seen whether Abhi's condemnation of Aishwarya's critics will have any effect. Aishwarya herself addressed her critics in an interview at the Cannes Film Festival in which she said that she's completely fine with the way she looks. She also recently condemned the film industry for valuing an actress's weight over her health.
Unlike the media, Abhishek and Aishwarya have conducted themselves with class and grace. It's a shame that he's had to make a statement like this at all in defense of his wife, but no good man would have done any differently.
