The superpowers of The Avengers apparently know no bounds -- especially when it comes to the box office. Walt Disney Pictures said that the superhero flick will probably surpass $600 million in U.S. ticket sales on Tuesday. That's something that only two other movies have achieved: James Cameron's Titanic did it first, and then his Avatar did the same thing.
That's just the latest in a series of box-office records that Joss Whedon's blockbuster has set during its amazing run, including opening weekend and second weekend. It also hit the $200 million, $300 million, $400 million, and $500 million marks faster than any other movie. Clearly six superheroes are better than one!
Where will the Avengers juggernaut stop? Although it's slowing down a bit, landing in eighth place last weekend with a take of $7.2 million, it obviously still has some legs. And it's definitely the kind of movie that people go to see in the theater more than once. One can assume that some of the movie's incredible success is a result of repeat viewings, especially by teens and comic-book fanboys. No doubt the long 4th of July weekend will add even further to the final tally.
With numbers like these, can the sequel be far behind?
