Ann Curry was in tears as she made the poignant announcement Thursday morning that she is, in fact, leaving The Today Show--and that Thursday would be her very last day on the air in her capacity as Today Show co-anchor.
According to a report from Hollywood Life, rumors swirled for days about her departure date and exactly what her status with NBC would be once she left. Ann touched upon that in her announcement, but details still aren't perfectly clear.
"This is going to be my last morning as a regular co-host of the Today show: I will still be part of the Today family, I'll have a new title and a new role. This is not what I expected, the way I would leave this couch," she said.
Ann Curry broke down sobbing as she kept speaking.
"For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I'm so sorry I couldn't carry the ball over the finish line. But man I did try, so for all of you who watched, I thank you," she said.
Curry said she'll remain 'within the Today Show family' and that she'll be given a 'fancy new title.' She remained rather noncommittal when sharing specific details and it truly appeared as though there was a lot more she wanted to say.
"I get tickets to every big story we want to cover," she said. "With a terrific team of my choosing. Will go all over the world and country - After all these years I don't know if I can sleep in anymore but whatever time I wake up I'll be believing in you, missing you."
Ann addressed the rumor that she and Matt Lauer simply didn't click, but again it was done in a rather awkward way.
"You know, Matt and I have had great on-air chemistry for 14 years, been part of the No. 1 winning team for a history-making number of years," she says. "That said, I just finished my freshman year as co-host. In every single co-host's first year, there have been kinks to be worked out, and perhaps I deserve as much blame for that as anyone."
At this part in her goodbye, Matt Lauer consoled Ann. He said her departure was by no means 'the end' and mentioned she'd be joining the Today Show crew in London this summer for the Olympics.
"You have the biggest heart in the business," Matt said. "And you put it on display every morning in this studio for 20 years."
Ann Curry wore her heart on her sleeve Thursday morning as she said goodbye to viewers and to her position as co-anchor on The Today Show. And despite her tears and the few details shared within her words, it really appeared as though there is so much more to this story.
Did you see Ann say goodbye on the Today Show? Do you think there was more she really wished she could say?
Nothing has been announced as of yet regarding Ann's replacement as Today Show co-anchor.
