Actor Gary Sinise of CSI: New York had no idea the impact playing the role of Lt. Dan in the film Forrest Gump would have on the rest of his life. Now he finds himself working even harder to support wounded veterans than he works on his acting career.
According to a report from FOX News, Sinise is the frontman in a band called The Lt. Dan Band, and all proceeds earned by the band go to help wounded U.S. troops, vets and their families.
A documentary about Sinise and his efforts will debut on The Documentary Channel on Sunday. Called Lt. Dan Band: For The Common Good, the show will highlight his inspiring journey.
"I just felt a call to action after what happened on September 11th. I had been involved with a lot of different veterans' organizations supporting Vietnam veterans groups and the Disabled American Veterans organization which I got involved with after 'Forrest Gump,' and September 11th just shook me," Sinise says. "I felt a call to action to help our country through a difficult time."
Gary Sinise has used his celebrity status to draw attention to veterans and wounded troops in hopes that others will jump on the bandwagon and help out, too. His work comes from the heart, and there's no ulterior motive whatsoever.
"I'm not in it to be a composer or a recording star. I have a good career as an actor, that is what I do for a living. The band is completely and totally separate, it is part of a spiritual mission to serve the needs of men and women in uniform and people that are serving our country," Sinise says. "The band folds into a mission to lift spirits and morale and show support. When I first started USO tours it was just handshaking and pictures, and on the very first tour in Iraq I asked if they would let me bring (my musicians) on tour and entertain. I am an actor, but I didn't want to go up there and do a monologue. That wouldn't be entertaining for anyone."
Do you remember Gary Sinise in the role of Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump? Do you watch him on CSI: New York? It's truly amazing how much of a huge heart and a kind soul is hiding behind the handsome veneer of this suave and sophisticated actor. When he takes the stage as The Lt. Dan Band's frontman, there's nothing he wants more than to make wounded U.S. veterans and troops happy and to improve the quality of their lives after they've worked hard to serve their country.
How many Hollywood celebrities do you know who take their beliefs and patriotic convictions to this level of achievement?
