Joseph Gordon-Levitt probably offended a lot of his past female costars with a comment he made at Comic-Con.
The Dark Knight Rises actor was talking about his other big sci-fi film Looper when he chose the wrong words to compliment his costar Emily Blunt. He said of the Bri
tish beauty, "Pretty girls aren't usually funny."
According to Josh Dickey of Variety, Emily visibly "bristled" at the compliment, which could definitely be perceived as being sexist. Joseph was saying that he immediately makes the assumption that a good-looking girl is going to be boring without giving her a chance to open her mouth, and women generally don't like it when generalizations like this are made about their sex.
Emily Blunt isn't the only costar of Joseph Gordon-Levitt that could be offended by the comment. He's starred with tons of pretty actresses over the years, and lots of their fans would argue that they're pretty darn funny.
JGL's The Dark Knight Rises costar Anne Hathaway is one example. Joe should know her well after also starring with her in Havoc, but perhaps she doesn't work as hard to make people laugh in real life as she has in movies like The Devil Wears Prada and Bride Wars. Or maybe JGL just isn't a chick flick fan.
And surely he can't be serious about pretty girls not being funny after starring alongside Zooey Deschanel in (500) Days of Summer. He must find her pretty entertaining since he hangs out with her enough that they decided to sing "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" together for a viral video. And of course Zooey also gets lots of laughs on her show New Girl.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Inception costar Ellen Page is yet another funny and cute girl—she's starred in comedies like Juno and Super. His 50/50 costar Anna Kendrick, who also starred in the comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, comes off as having a great sense of humor during her interviews, and even Hesher actress Natalie Portman has proved that she's not just out to get Oscars with No Strings Attached and Your Highness (well, at least she's attempted to do comedy).
Then there's JGL's The Lookout costar Isla Fisher—she might not be as funny as her hubby Sacha Baron Cohen, but she did star in the hit comedy Wedding Crashers.
So based on the actresses that Joseph worked with, he could a) have a strange sense of humor; or b) have extremely high standards when it comes to women. Or it's simply possible that these actresses just aren't funny if someone isn't writing lines for them.
So what do you think of his comment?
