Kate Upton is this generation's Marilyn Monroe. She's got the curves, she's got the classic beauty, and she's not afraid to show off her body in a little string bikini. But, she wasn't always celebrated for her looks. As a matter of fact, the super model's been brushed off, ridiculed as being too fat and boring by industry giants.
That hasn't stopped her, though, and in fact, it only seems to have fueled the fire in her to prove that anorexic models are not beautiful. Upton tried using agents earlier in her career with little success. She was always told she was fat, but she knew she wasn't. Looking at photos of her, you'd think she looks pretty damn good, thin even. So how is it that Victoria's Secret booker Sophia Neophitou scoffed at her as being nothing more than "a page three girl?"
It's probably because she refuses to conform to industry standards by starving herself. Regarding the industry criticism she's endured on her way to fame, she says, "I'm not doing drugs or not eating. I want to enjoy life and I can't be enjoying life if I'm not eating and miserable."
The sassy model, who achieved fame through social networking rather than by using agents who, she says, treat clients horribly, is doing pretty well for herself. She's on this year's cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. She's the new Guess girl, and is a favorite of men's magazine's everywhere.
Kate Upton has inspired fear in the modeling world by proving what everyone already knows: a natural, curvy figure is much more beautiful than an emaciated walking clothes hanger.
