Mariah Carey is reportedly joining the American Idol team as a judge for the show's upcoming 12th season. Fox just made the official announcement confirming her as a new judge moments ago.
According to a report from EW.com, Simon Cowell was reportedly trying to get Carey to sign on as a mentor on The X Factor. While not definite, it's likely her appointment to American Idol precludes this appearance.
"It's the biggest
recording artist than any of these [singing competition] shows have ever had," Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said earlier on Monday in Beverly Hills. "It's an artist many of these contestants have tried to emulate. [The deal] only concluded only hours ago. Not being the only game in town we need to keep things fresh."
Mariah Carey is expected to make between $12 million (what Jennifer Lopez made for being a judge on American Idol) and $17 million for sitting in a judge's seat for one season. She will fill one of two vacant seats left open by Lopez and Steven Tyler. Rumor has it that Randy Jackson may step down from the judge's table as well, and take on a different role on American Idol, but that hasn't yet been confirmed.
What do you think about Mariah joining American Idol for its upcoming 12th season? Do you think she'll be a positive addition to the show that seriously floundered in their last season's ratings?

Hmmm, sounds like a dig to J-Lo, even Tyler, for that matter~I get the impression their leaving isn't on friendly terms.
