Chavis Carter was remembered in a peaceful candlelight vigil on Monday night, August 6. Approximately 300 people turned out to show their support to the young man who lost his life in the back of a police car in what can only be described as suspicious circumstances. Family, friends and complete strangers paid their respect to the 21-year-old man who was shot in the head.
His death has raised hackles in the Jonesboro, Arkansas community and all across the nation. Reverend Adrian Rodgers organized the event that brought a community of caring people together. He explained the gathering, "We're not here to hurl accusations but to say that certainly a tragedy occurred, and that we're coming together for the healing of our city, and of course, we're praying for the family and the officers as well."
Obviously, there are a lot of questions surrounding Chavis's death, but Rodgers wants to allow officials the chance to conduct their investigation. Some attendees held up signs asking what really happened, but the wheels of the justice system are excruciatingly slow. It could be several weeks before any answers about Chavis Carter's death are available.
It will be up to the FBI to prove what really happened and all anybody can hope for is a truthful, unbiased investigation.
