It seems Ann Curry may be gone from The Today Show, but she's still a hot topic of conversation—at least behind the scenes. Staffers reportedly miss her and think the NBC bigwigs made a huge mistake in replacing her with Savannah Guthrie.
According to a report from RadarOnline, Good Morning America is still consistently beating The Today Show in the ratings, and staffers are letting their guard down and opening up about how they really feel about her removal from the show.
"The staffers of the TODAY show miss Ann tremendously and feel it was a mistake to replace her with Savannah," a source says. "Ann had been part of the TODAY show for over 15 years, and her send off was just horribly executed. It's not lost on anyone that GMA beat the TODAY show on Wednesday in the ratings yet again. Viewers have had enough and the show just isn't staying relevant. Morale is extremely low and something is going to need to change very quickly before they can get the TODAY show back in first place for good."
To top this off, Al Roker even inadvertently (or was it?) dissed Matt Lauer and the execs behind the decision to fire Ann during Thursday's episode of Today. Matt was chatting with U.S. Olympic rower Mary Whipple, when the following took place.
"The ladies threw you in the water after winning the gold?" Lauer asked Whipple. "The tradition here in New York is you throw her in the Hudson River."
"Which is different to our tradition here which is to throw one of us under the bus! But that's a different story..." Al Roker added.
Both Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie looked shocked and quickly responded with a rather sarcastic but bewildered, "Mr. Roker!" in almost perfect unison.
It was just over a week ago while reporting from the Olympics that Ann pretty much stonewalled Matt Lauer during his faux attempts at niceties while the two were on the air together. (Go, Ann!) Now with Al's diss and the staff's revelation of their feelings, it's becoming even more clear that someone made a really big mistake in firing Ann from The Today Show.
"The crew would LOVE Ann back on set, some have even suggested privately that Matt Lauer take a long vacation and see how the ratings would shake out in that scenario," the source says.
How would that go over with Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie? Even if Ann Curry is offered the option to return to The Today Show, do you think she'll accept?
There's little peace at The Today Show—especially behind the scenes. Hopefully Ann is getting at least a little satisfaction knowing that things are in a bit of a mess since she was forced out.
Do you think NBC bigwigs realize their mistake? Might they swallow their pride and ask Ann back?
