Russian activists are suing Madonna for millions because of her strong gay rights support displayed at a recent concert in St. Petersburg. Russia exhibits a very strong anti-gay sentiment.
According to a report from the Huffington Post, a new law passed in Russia in February making it illegal to 'promote homosexuality to minors.' The lawsuit claims there were children as young as 12 years old at her August 9th concert.
The lawsuit against the Like A Virgin singer features a video of her concert, depicting a call to fans to raise their arms and display the pink arm bands they sported in support of gays and lesbians. Her entourage distributed the arm bands prior to the show's start.
Madonna has definitely made a name for herself in Russia. She has even angered conservatives with her support of the band Pussy Riot. They were sentenced to two years in jail for a protest inside Moscow's main cathedral against Vladimir Putin's relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church. The singer condemned the sentence calling on "all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment."
Might this lawsuit represent not only a claim for millions from Madge, but possibly the last time she performs in Russia, too? Will she wind up proud of her stance or upset at her financial losses?
