A new Fifty Shades of Grey trailer has just appeared, seemingly from out of nowhere. The new offering pairs Zac Efron as Christian Grey with Kirsten Dunst as his novice submissive sex slave. No, that's not a misprint. In this latest trailer, Kirsten Dunst plays Anastasia Steele. Talk about creative casting. Whatever.
Yes, 50 Shades of Grey devotees and High School Musical fans may finally have something in common. A brand new trailer touting the movie version of E.L. James's controversial bestselling "mommie porn" novel has just surfaced online. According to Renier Palland at Celeb Dirty Laundry, "nothing specific in the trailer alludes to whether it is a fan video trailer or whether it is the real thing." Obviously Efron acolytes will be praying for the latter, because The Lucky One star definitely smolders in this interesting and uniquely crafted video.
Unlike previous fan made and/or unofficial videos starring Matt Bomer, Ian Somerhalder, and Henry Cavill, the Zac Efron version avoids bombarding its viewers with blatantly sexual images and a hard rock soundtrack. The Efron/Dunst trailer's pace is languid without being ponderous, sensual and erotically charged without ever approaching the pornographic, and rich with "underlying imagery and sub-text from an exotic past" without ever seeming confusing or chaotic. And it's classical music soundtrack is reminiscent of the male dominant/female submissive BDSM classic film, The Night Porter.
The new trailer is, like the Cavill and Bomer versions, shot in film noir black and white. The trailer opens with a couple of blood-red, almost Rorschach-esque images floating across a jet black screen. They are followed by a caption announcing 50 Shades of Grey...The Film as "the most courageous trilogy of our generation, [and] the most anticipated moment of the year." The visual narrative then moves on through a series of indelibly memorable images, beginning with Efron's elegantly back-lit, close-up, chiselled profile which gives way to a dreamlike glimpse of Christian and Anastasia having what looks like ecstatic vanilla sex. A shot of Anastasia walking slowly but purposefully down a street talking on her cell phone segues into an image of her clad in a towel, combing her hair. "These events will change an entire generation" insists the last on-screen caption before dissolving into the final haunting, separate images of Efron and Dunst.
There isn't much more to say. Except perhaps that calling Fifty Shades of Grey "the most courageous trilogy of our generation" is not only hyperbolic, it's downright ridiculous. As if. It is however, without a doubt, "the most anticipated moment of the year." And that raises the inevitable question: Can Efron and Dunst pull it off? Zac certainly has the handsome face, buff body, and possibly the screen presence to make a convincingly entrancing Christian Grey, plus he'll bring to the box office his own fan base which is considerable. As for Kirsten, she's proved she's a fine actress, but does she really look the part?
Oh well, watch the video below. What do you think?
