Kate Middleton may be one of the most recognized females in the world, given her status as the Duchess of Cambridge, wife of Prince William, and her ubiquitous presence at the recent London 2012 Olympic Games, not to mention the constant attention paid to her every fashion move. But apparently not everyone knows a royal when they see one, not even someone in a place near Middleton's Welsh home. Shocker!
Of course, the seemingly down-to-earth and unquestionably sophisticated Middleton probably couldn't have been more pleased to have had an anonymous moment. Her incognito days are long over. She must appreciate any time that she's not in the spotlight, as she seems to be far from a "celebrity" who relishes the constant crush of the paparazzi and the flashbulbs.
But just how could this have happened? It's not like she was in disguise or wearing a blonde wig! It seems a nearly impossible feat that she be unrecognized, especially across the pond in a place so close to her hometown.
Two words: Dave Buckland. He's the owner of the Funsport beachside shop in Rhosneigr on Anglesey, which recently got the royal treatment when Kate Middleton stopped by to purchase a wetsuit. But this shopping trip was actually full of irony. First of all, Middleton forgot her cash and credit card and couldn't pay for the suit, as Wales Online reports. Talk about a funny picture: the penniless princess! Then, that's when the retail scene got really interesting.
Upon asking if the store could hold the wetsuit for her, Buckland inquired as to what name he should put with it, and she reportedly replied, "Mrs. Cambridge." It seems she must have gotten quite the kick out of the situation. But did he really not know who he was dealing with, or was he just playing along and being respectful?
According to a source, he legitimately had no idea! The insider admitted, "[Buckland] was looking straight at her and actually commented that it was quite an unusual surname. He hadn't a clue who she was. She just smiled and said she'd be back. He hasn't lived it down since."
As for Buckland, he's apparently staying mum on his little gaff, only revealing, "She's entitled to some privacy... I'll just say I'm happy with the rumor." So was he just saving face by copping to the story's "rumor" status, or could the whole thing have been misconstrued?
