She isn't one to shy away from an extreme hairstyle - Rihanna's hair has been blonde, black, bruneette and red locks, and every style from retro curls to disco crimping. Her latest look has shocked even her most fashion-forward followers, though...
Just days after the singer was accused of being stuck in a fashion rut, and unable to shock with her style anymore, Rihanna has emerged with a very short, very shocking style.
The 24-year-old seemed happy with her new look as she arrived in Los Angeles for the MTV Music Awards tonight, and cheerfully waved at the cameras. She seemed to know all eyes would be on her hair, too, and arrived in a pair of plain blue jeans and a loose-fitting white T-shirt. Blue and orange trainers and a thick gold necklace were the only hints at her usual bold style.
Rihanna is no stranger to short hair. She sported a trendy short pixie cut for her role in Battlefield earlier this year, and had a short style for a period in 2009, although both looks were longer, and had edgy feminine fringes and strands.
The star is usually very vocal about her style changes on social networking site Twitter, but made no mention of her shorter hair. However, her hairdresser Ursula Stephen did recently give an interview explaining how they decided what to do with Rihanna's hair.
"We are always changing it up, experimenting, and having fun with hair. That's what I love to do! Her hairstyle typically changes depending on what's on our agenda, what she's wearing, or how she's feeling. We take it day by day and event by event, and usually both bring ideas to the table. It's always a collaboration, which is a great way to work."
Rihanna's performance tonight was already set to be the biggest at the awards, and she's now guaranteed extra media attention. With such an unusual haircut, and a low-key day outfit, Rihanna seems to be hiding a surprise - and all eyes will be on what she's wearing to perform Cockiness with A$AP Rocky.
Rihanna's nominated for five awards, including Best Female Video and Best Pop Video, and will perform alongside Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift and Frank Ocean.
