The media loves to throw Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan together for no good reason, but this week there was a legitimate occasion to link the two former lovers.
Aishwarya pays more taxes than any other woman in the Indian film industry; Salman pays more than any man in the industry. An income tax official has revealed that this year Salman paid Rs. 8 crore (about $1.6 million) in advance taxes, compared to Rs. 5 crore last year.
And what was Aishwarya's tax bill? Just slightly over Rs. 3 crore, or $600,000. She was closely followed by Katrina Kaif, who paid Rs. 2.6 crore.
Interestingly Aishwarya has had a far higher income during her time away from the film industry than she did during the last tax period (during which she paid a little over 1 crore in taxes). Her eye popping Rs. 20 crore endorsement deal with Kalyan Jewellers has certainly helped line her pocketbook this year!
But it was, as usual, the industry's men who ran away with the lion's share of profits, and they have the tax bills to prove it. In addition to Salman Khan's 8 crores, Akshay Kumar paid 7.5 crores, Shahrukh Khan paid 5 crores, and Aamir Khan got hit for 3.25 crores.
Some may grumble about excessive pay levels for actors but it can't be said that they don't honor their social obligations by paying their taxes—maybe certain politicians should be looking toward the film industry for guidance when it comes to being financially responsible!
