Justin Bieber has a major case of aerophobia. For this pop sensation, flying the friendly skies is, well, not so friendly. While the "Boyfriend" singer and his starlet girlfriend, Selena Gomez, have recently been caught up in a whirlwind of breakup rumors (which have been elevated, especially since the Biebs posted a mystery "single"-inspired anagram on his Instagram), his biggest fear, apparently, is not losing his girlfriend; it's taking off from the runway.
"I just started to really not like getting on a flight. It scares me," the singer recently revealed to Live magazine, as Entertainmentwise reports. "When I get anxiety, my heart drops and starts beating really fast as if it's going to explode."
"People say you have more chance of getting into a car accident than a plane crash, but they do maybe one flight a year and I'm on planes all the time," he added. "And all the time I'm thinking, 'I have no control. If this plane crashes I'm dead. I feel like every time I get on a plane I'm risking my life.'"
It sounds like Bieber may be experiencing some incredibly heightened anxiety. However, occasionally, phobias such as the fear of flying can be triggered by an entirely different conflict. The "Baby" heartthrob may have a racing heart when boarding a plane because he's dealing with some other drama in his life—perchance the pressure of the fame game as he's en route to his next international concert or promotional appearance. Maybe he's even experiencing a figurative bumpy ride in a personal relationship, say, with Selena Gomez, which has been manifested in extra nervousness when he's 30,000 feet off the ground.
Hopefully the 18-year-old Justin Bieber will grow out of his seemingly acute aerophobia. Otherwise, this globe-trotting, international star may have quite a few more turbulent rides ahead.
