According to a book by Newsnight host Jeremy Paxman, Charles, Prince of Wales requires his morning breakfast to consist of seven boiled eggs, lined up with the firmest at the back and the less firm at the front. According to the book, he then chooses one of the eggs to eat, and apparently wastes the rest. However, Charles' new website, launched this week, refutes the claim of wasted eggs completely.
Of course, subjects of the Monarchy had no problem believing this tale of boiled eggs. Eccentricity from the rich is not only easily believed, it is usually expected. While wasting eggs is probably not the most eccentric thing that a member of the royal family has done, it is certainly something that grabbed the attention of the public. Unfortunately, it just isn't true.
It was the FAQ section of the official website that put the rumor to rest saying: "Does The Prince of Wales have seven boiled eggs cooked for his breakfast but only eat one as claimed in Jeremy Paxman's book On Monarchy? No, he doesn't and never has done, at breakfast or any other time." There are many other questions answered by the FAQ section as well about the royal couple.
Paxman has not made any statement regarding the refutation, but in the book, he attributed the claim to a friend of the prince, and even he, himself called it so "preposterously extravagant as to be unbelievable". What Charles, Prince of Wales does have for breakfast is unclear, but it isn't seven hard boiled eggs.
